Opening the Parliamentary Hearings "National Identity in Ukraine under the Conditions of Globalization Challenges: Problems and Ways of Preservation" Mykola Tomenko named the theme essential.
"Ukraine received considerable level of public identity, but the most essential issues for today is the national identity", - M. Tomenko.
The Vice-Chairman declared that today, Ukraine had made big step forward in the framework of the public identity matter. He cited the results of public opinion poll according to which, in the year 2002 49% of respondents were proud of the fact they are Ukrainians and in the year 2007- 65%.
In fact, the issues of the national identity are more complicated according to the Vice-Chairman. "The major factor in this issue remains informational policy."
The Vice-Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine emphases that one of the most powerful instruments determining national identity if Ukrainian language and culture. "One must clearly comprehend that the importance of national language or culture is not formed neither by the Laws of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine nor by the Orders of the President and Government", - M. Tomenko emphasized.
Pavlo Movchan, the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Creative Activity, Art, Cultural and Language Policy, the initiator of the hearings, declared that the "concept of the open society in the sphere of the national ideology and culture formed immense favourable conditions for the global expansion of American mass culture and injury of traditionally national languages and cultures."
Volodymyr Yavorivsky, the Chairman of the Committee on Culture and Spirituality proclaimed that Ukraine had faced inner and external challenges for its national identity. According to the words of the People´s Deputy, Ukraine experienced the post-colonial syndrome in its policy, culture and economic spheres.
M. Yakovyn, the Vice-Minister on Culture and Tourism deems the national identity of Ukraine is considerable dependant on the balance between cultures of the title nation and national minorities´ cultures hence it is necessary to use language divergence of Ukraine as it is our nation fortune.
According to Ya. Kendzior, the People´s Deputy of Ukraine, the formation of the modern Ukrainian identity greatly depends on the young generation education, in particular it concerns the sense of patriotism, cultural and physical development of young people and also realization of the scientific and creative potential.
